What Thay're Saying... There's only one lonely straight ahead jazz disc in this batch of CD-Rs, JUST FRIENDS by THE FRANK MOSER JR QUINTET. Recorded live at the 1997 Syracuse Jazz Festival, this group goes about the paces nicely playing several Jazz standards (Spontaneous Combustion/ Lizabeth/ Rythmn-a-ning/ Lover Man/ Recorda Me/Just Friends. Moser, as; Joe Magnarelli, tpt, flgh; Rick montalbano, p; Daryl Pugh, b; Jimmy Johns, d) with style and verve with both Moser and Magnarelli bringing energy and warmth to their playing. ...from CADENCE (the
review of Jazz&Blues: creative improvised music, Feb. '05) Friends in Jazz It's always a pleasure to be part of the "Syracuse Jazz Fast" and this particular main stage appearance with my friends in June '97 was a real highlight. The last tune we play is "Just Friends" which is even more important than the music... having friends to share the music. Rick Montalbano is the consummate accompanist with singers and musicians. It's a rare talent to translate the sensitivity of the human soul into the reality of music and Rick has that talent. I feel very fortunate in his company, on and off the stand. I've been listening to Jim Johns far over 20 years, seeing him mature into the fine musician he is today. I've always admired his "lac-a-dangness" on drums, and now, his sophisticated approach to playing jazz on vibes. I feel comfortable with Jamo no matter the setting or the music we play. Darryl Pugh is a classical bassist whose main gig is the Syracuse Symphony. But like another friend, Cal Custer, Darryl loves jazz and other cultural forms of music, including his recent foray into Afro Cuban rhythms. Darryl is a Renaissance man; unafraid to go where his musical heart takes him. Joe Magnarelli has become, in very short order, one of the new young lions on the modern jazz scene. Joe took jazz very seriously, practicing for hours everyday for several years. The result of this dedication can be heard in his trumpet and flugle horn work. And like the rest of this group, I feel comfortable when Joe is with me. This is a group of friends who always have a good time together. I hope you have as much fun listening to this music as we had performing it. Frank Moser |
